How ballpark weather changes MLB games
Weather is one of the few game-day factors that moves home-run odds in a measurable way. This report tracks the forecast for every MLB game — wind speed and direction relative to each park's field orientation, temperature, rain-delay risk, and roof status — and translates it into the expected effect on home-run carry, updated throughout the day from game-level forecasts.
How does wind affect home runs in MLB?
Wind blowing out adds carry to fly balls and wind blowing in knocks them down. The effect scales with both wind speed and how closely the wind lines up with the center-field axis: a strong wind straight out to center can boost home-run carry by as much as roughly 25%, while a crosswind at the same speed has far less effect. Our board shows each ballpark’s actual wind direction relative to its field orientation, not just a compass reading.
Which MLB stadiums have roofs or domes?
MLB has one fixed dome — Tropicana Field — plus seven retractable-roof parks: Globe Life Field, Daikin Park (formerly Minute Maid Park), Chase Field, T-Mobile Park, American Family Field, Rogers Centre and loanDepot park. A closed roof takes weather out of play entirely. The board marks each game’s roof status — when the roof is closed, wind and rain have no effect on the game. Retractable-roof decisions are published a few hours before first pitch; until then the board marks the roof status as pending and leans on the game-time forecast to flag whether the roof is likely open or closed. When the roof is likely open, predictions apply that forecast; a likely-closed roof keeps weather out until the state is confirmed.
Does temperature change how far a baseball travels?
Yes — warm air is less dense, so fly balls carry farther on hot days. As a rule of thumb each extra degree adds roughly one percent to home-run likelihood relative to a cool night, which is why a 95° afternoon slate plays very differently from a 60° evening one. The board folds temperature into each game’s overall HR context read.
How is delay risk shown?
The precipitation number is the peak probability across the scheduled game window — not the chance at first pitch — so a storm arriving in the 6th inning still shows up. A 0% means the forecast is genuinely dry for the whole game. On forecast alone roofed parks read clear (the roof closes for rain), but once the league posts a delay or postponement any park shows it. During wildfire-smoke events an air-quality reading appears on the card and can raise the delay risk on its own.
